Royal Ascot is the centrepiece of the British flat season: five days in June, thirty-five races, and eight of them at Group One level. It is a different betting proposition from the jumps festivals – flat racing, large competitive fields, and horses arriving from across Europe and beyond with form that does not always compare cleanly. This page covers how the week is structured, the markets that suit it, and the terms worth checking before the meeting. It stays here between years.

How the week is structured

Each of the five days opens with a Group One and closes with a competitive handicap, which is a useful thing to know: the first race of the afternoon is usually the highest-quality and most readable contest on the card, and the last is usually the hardest.

  • Day one – the Queen Anne Stakes over a straight mile opens the meeting, followed by the two-mile Ascot Gold Cup’s main trial and the St James’s Palace Stakes for three-year-old milers.
  • Day two – the Prince of Wales’s Stakes over a mile and a quarter is the day’s championship race and often the best contest of the week on official ratings.
  • Day three – Ladies’ Day, and the Ascot Gold Cup over two and a half miles, the meeting’s stamina championship and the oldest race of the five days.
  • Day four – the Commonwealth Cup for three-year-old sprinters and the Coronation Stakes for three-year-old fillies over a mile.
  • Day five – the Platinum Jubilee Stakes over six furlongs, a sprint that regularly draws international runners and closes the meeting.

What makes Royal Ascot hard to bet

  • Field sizes. Ascot handicaps regularly attract twenty-plus runners of closely matched ability. These are among the most competitive flat races run anywhere in the season.
  • International form. Runners arrive from Ireland, France, Australia, Japan and the United States with form on different surfaces and in different conditions. Comparing it to British form is genuinely difficult and the market frequently gets it wrong in both directions.
  • The straight course. Races up the straight mile and the sprint course are affected by which side of the track the field races on. In large fields the runners often split into two groups, and the group that picks the better ground has a real advantage that has nothing to do with the horses.
  • The draw. In sprints on the straight course the stall position matters, and how much it matters changes with the going and the size of the field. It is a real factor, but it is also frequently overstated.
  • Three-year-olds against older horses. Several races bring the generations together, and the weight-for-age allowance that is supposed to equalise them is a blunt instrument in June.

Markets and terms

Each-way and extra places

As at any meeting with large fields, place terms do much of the work. Ascot’s big handicaps attract extended place terms from most firms during the week. In a twenty-eight runner handicap the difference between four places and six is substantial, and worth more than a marginally better win price.

Ante-post and non-runner no bet

Ante-post markets on the feature races open well before the meeting. Flat horses are less prone to missing targets than jumpers, so the withdrawal risk is lower than at Cheltenham – but it is not zero, particularly with international runners whose participation can depend on ground conditions. Check whether non-runner no bet applies before taking an early price.

Best odds guaranteed

Standard on British flat racing at almost every firm. With the volume of money that goes through Ascot’s markets, early prices and starting prices diverge more than usual, which makes it worth having.

Without the favourite, and match bets

Useful in the Group Ones, where a single dominant horse can make the win market unattractive while the race for the places remains open.

Top jockey and top trainer

Markets on the leading rider and yard across the five days. These are decided by a small number of races and are more volatile than they look, but they are one of the few ways to bet a view on the meeting rather than a race.

What moves the market

The going is the dominant factor, as it is everywhere, but at Ascot in June it is unusually changeable – a dry week produces firm ground that suits a completely different type of horse from a wet one, and several international runners will be declared or withdrawn on the basis of it. Watch the going reports through the week rather than assuming Monday’s description holds until Saturday.

The other significant factor is the pattern of the straight course. By day three it is usually clear which side of the track is riding faster, and that information is available to anyone watching the earlier races. It is one of the few genuine edges available at the meeting and it costs nothing but attention.

The sprints, and why they are different

Three of the meeting’s Group Ones are sprints, and they are the races where the conditions of the track matter most. Over five and six furlongs the field has no time to recover from a slow start or a bad position, and in a large field on the straight course the runners will usually split into two groups racing up opposite rails.

That split is the defining feature of Ascot sprint betting. Which group goes faster is partly the going, partly where the pace is drawn, and it is often not apparent until the race is run. It introduces a large element of chance that is not reflected in the individual horses’ form, and it is the main reason favourites in Ascot sprints have a weaker record than favourites in the middle-distance Group Ones on the round course.

The practical response is to bet sprints each-way rather than to win, to take extra places where they are offered, and to treat a beaten favourite in one of these races as a horse worth following next time rather than one exposed as overrated.

International runners

Royal Ascot draws more overseas runners than any other British meeting, particularly in the sprints and the mile races. Australian sprinters, Japanese middle-distance horses, American turf specialists and French-trained runners all appear, and their form is genuinely hard to rate against domestic form because it was earned on different surfaces, at different times of year and against different opposition.

Two things are worth knowing. Travel and quarantine take a toll, and a horse arriving from the southern hemisphere is often running outside its normal season. But the horses sent are usually the best of their type, sent specifically because connections believe they can win, which is a stronger signal than a domestic runner turning up because the race was on the calendar.

Common questions

When is Royal Ascot?

Five days in June, Tuesday to Saturday. The status line at the top of this page carries the next confirmed window, and shows the month only where the exact days have not yet been confirmed.

Which is the biggest race?

The Ascot Gold Cup on the Thursday is the meeting’s most historic race and its stamina championship, run over two and a half miles. On official ratings the Prince of Wales’s Stakes on the Wednesday is usually the highest-quality contest of the week.

Does the draw matter?

In sprints on the straight course, yes – but less predictably than people assume. It matters mainly through which group of runners ends up on the faster ground, which is not always the same side from day to day. Watching the earlier races on a card is more informative than any general rule about high or low numbers.

Is it worth betting ante-post?

Less risky than at the jumps festivals, because flat horses miss targets less often, but the international entries add uncertainty of their own. Check for non-runner no bet as you would anywhere else.

Royal Ascot betting offers

Ascot week produces a concentration of promotions comparable to the jumps festivals: extra places on the handicaps, money back on beaten favourites, and enhanced prices on individual runners. As always, the offers that change the mathematics of a bet – extra places above all – are worth more than the ones that add a free bet on top.

Responsible gambling

Five days of racing with thirty-five competitive races is a lot of opportunities in one week. A limit set for the whole meeting before it starts is more useful than a limit set day by day, because the temptation on the Saturday is always to put the week right in one afternoon.

Every UK-licensed bookmaker must offer deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion. Free and confidential support is available from GambleAware at gambleaware.org and from GamCare. GAMSTOP lets you self-exclude from every UK-licensed gambling site at once.
