The Champions League runs from September to the final at the end of May, and it is the busiest betting competition in the European football calendar outside a World Cup summer. The format changed in 2024 and it changed the betting with it: there are no longer six group matches against the same three opponents, but eight matches against eight different clubs in a single 36-team league. This page carries the fixtures as they come, explains the markets that suit the competition, and stays here between seasons.

How the league phase changed the betting
Under the old group format, a strong side could lose its opening match and still qualify comfortably, because it had five more games against two beatable opponents. That safety net is gone. Every club now plays eight different opponents, seeded across four pots, and the table is a single 36-team league.
- The top eight go straight through to the last 16. Places nine to 24 go into a two-legged knockout play-off round. Places 25 to 36 are eliminated outright, with no consolation route into the Europa League.
- Goal difference matters far more. Separating clubs on 12 or 13 points takes goal difference, and in a 36-team table one heavy win can move a club several places. That makes handicap and goals markets in apparent mismatches more meaningful than they were.
- Fixture difficulty is uneven. Two clubs on the same points can have faced very different opposition, because the eight opponents are drawn rather than fixed. Check who a club has actually played before reading its position as form.
- The last matchday is played simultaneously. All 18 fixtures kick off at the same time, which removes the old advantage of knowing other results, and makes the final round unusually volatile.
Markets that suit the Champions League
Outright winner
A long market, running from September to late May. Prices on the leading contenders shorten sharply once the last 16 is set, so the value in backing a favourite sits early. The counter-argument is that eight league-phase matches plus a possible play-off round give more chances for an injury or a slump to intervene.
To qualify from the league phase
A market created by the new format, and often the most readable one. A top-eight finish, a top-24 finish and outright elimination are three quite different propositions for a mid-ranked club, and the prices frequently lag the fixture list.
Match result and double chance
Away teams do better in this competition than in most domestic leagues, partly because the travelling sides are usually the stronger ones and partly because a draw is a more acceptable result away from home. Double chance on a competitive away side is a common way to shorten the risk.
Over/under goals
League-phase matches between pot one and pot four clubs are where the goals markets are most one-sided, and the seeding makes those pairings frequent. The knockout rounds move the other way: two-legged ties tend to produce cautious first legs.
Both teams to score
Reliable in the league phase, much less so in the knockout rounds, where a first-leg clean sheet is worth more than a goal. Treat the two stages as separate competitions for this market.
Two-legged tie markets
From the play-off round onwards, bookmakers price the tie as well as each leg: to qualify, aggregate handicaps, and whether the tie goes to extra time. Aggregate markets are where a favourite’s price is often more honest than its odds for the first leg alone, because a strong side that draws away is still well placed.

On a full league-phase matchday there are 18 fixtures across two kick-off times, which makes large accumulators tempting. The seeded draw means several of those games are genuine mismatches and several are close to a coin toss – keeping a slip to the mismatches, rather than mixing the two, is a more honest reading of the card.
Reading the league-phase table
A 36-team table looks like a domestic league and is read quite differently. Three things trip people up.
Points totals compress in the middle. Historically the cut for the top eight has sat around 16 points from eight matches, and the cut for the top 24 nearer 8. Between those two numbers sit roughly twenty clubs separated by two or three points, which is why the qualification markets stay live until the final matchday and why goal difference decides so many placings.
Position is not form. Because the eight opponents are drawn rather than fixed, two clubs on the same points may have played entirely different schedules. A side on nine points from four pot-one opponents is in better shape than one on nine points from four pot-four opponents, and the table does not show that. Check the fixtures played before treating a position as a signal.
The seeding creates predictable mismatches. Each club plays two opponents from each of the four pots. That guarantees every side a couple of fixtures against far weaker opposition, and those are the games where goals and handicap lines are worth more attention than the match result.
The knockout play-off round
Clubs finishing ninth to twenty-fourth enter a two-legged play-off in February for the remaining eight places in the last 16. It is the round that most rewards reading the draw rather than the form guide.
Seeding means the higher-placed clubs are drawn against the lower-placed ones and play the second leg at home, which is a real if modest advantage. The teams that come through are then drawn against the sides that finished in the top eight, so a club can win a play-off and immediately face one of the strongest teams in the competition. For outright and to-qualify betting that matters: a good play-off price is often a bad last-16 price, and the two should be judged separately.
Mistakes that cost money in this competition
- Treating the league phase and the knockouts as one competition. Goals markets behave differently in each. A profitable league-phase approach to over 2.5 goals frequently stops working in February.
- Backing rotated sides on the final matchday. Clubs already certain of the top eight regularly rest players in the last round, and because every fixture kicks off simultaneously there is no chance to react to team news elsewhere.
- Assuming home advantage transfers. Home advantage is measurably weaker in European competition than in domestic leagues, in part because the travelling side is often the better team and in part because atmospheres vary far more.
- Reading a first leg as the tie. Aggregate markets price two matches. A narrow home win in the first leg is frequently a worse position than the scoreline suggests once the away goal advantage of the second leg is taken into account.
Qualifying for the Champions League
England has had five entrants in seasons where an English club won a European competition or the country finished high enough in UEFA’s coefficient ranking, and four in most others. The two extra places awarded each season to the best-performing associations are decided on results across all three UEFA competitions, which is why a strong season by English clubs in the Europa League affects the following season’s Champions League entry.
Domestic qualification is settled in May, and the outright market for the following season opens before the draw. Those early prices are set on squads rather than fixtures, and they move when the league phase draw is made in late August.
When Champions League matches are played
League-phase matches are played on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, with kick-offs at 17:45 and 20:00 UK time. One matchday each season is spread across Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The final round of the league phase is the exception: every fixture starts at the same time on a single night.
Knockout rounds run from February to May, again on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with the final on a Saturday evening at the end of May or start of June. The fixture table above updates as each round is confirmed.
Live betting on European nights
Two matches kicking off at 17:45 and eight more at 20:00 makes the Champions League the heaviest in-play night of the week.
