The World Cup is the single biggest betting event in football, and it works differently from a domestic season. It arrives once every four years, lasts about six weeks, and packs a whole season’s worth of markets into that window. This page stays here between tournaments: it explains how World Cup betting works, what the expanded format changed, and what the last tournament showed. It fills with fixtures and results again as soon as the next one begins.

When the next World Cup is

The 2030 tournament is the centenary edition, and FIFA has split it across two continents. Spain, Portugal and Morocco host the bulk of it. Three opening matches are played in South America – in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay – to mark a hundred years since the first World Cup in Montevideo in 1930. That is a genuinely new shape for the competition, and it matters for betting: the three South American fixtures sit thousands of miles from the rest of the tournament, and the teams involved travel back to Europe and North Africa immediately afterwards.

The 2034 tournament goes to Saudi Arabia. Expect a winter schedule again, as in 2022, rather than the usual June and July window.

How the 48-team format affects betting

The tournament expanded from 32 teams to 48 in 2026, and the format is now settled. It changes the betting in five concrete ways.

  • More matches, more markets – 104 matches instead of 64. That is 40 extra games, spread across roughly 39 days.
  • Third place can qualify – the best eight third-placed teams from the 12 groups go through. Very few teams are eliminated before their final group match, so dead rubbers are rare and motivation is harder to read.
  • An extra knockout round – the Round of 32 means favourites play more matches before the final. More rounds means more chances for an upset, a suspension or an injury to reshape the outright market.
  • Weaker teams in the draw – a 48-team field brings debutant nations into groups with established sides. Those fixtures produce lopsided scorelines, and the goals lines on them are correspondingly short.
  • Fatigue matters more – a team reaching the final now plays up to eight matches in under six weeks. Squad depth is a bigger factor than it was in a 32-team tournament, which tends to favour nations with two credible players in most positions over those built around one.

Types of World Cup bet

A World Cup offers a wider range of markets than an ordinary league weekend. These are the main bet types, how they work, and when each one is worth using.

Outright winner

Back a team to win the tournament. Prices are longest before the group stage and shorten quickly once it starts, so this is a market to enter early if you are going to enter it at all. Each-way betting is available at most bookmakers, usually at a quarter of the odds for the first two places.

Group winner

Predict which team tops a group. Simpler than the outright because only three matches have to go your way, and the prices on second favourites are often more generous than the outright market implies.

Match result (1X2)

Win, draw or win. Group matches draw roughly a quarter of the time, which is higher than most domestic leagues, because a point is often enough for both sides. In the knockout rounds, check whether the market settles on 90 minutes or includes extra time – the two are priced very differently.

Both teams to score

A popular World Cup market because international sides attack more freely than club teams in a league run. It is least reliable in the opening round of group matches, when caution is at its highest.

Over/under goals

Group stages in recent tournaments have averaged around two and a half goals per match. The expanded format pushes that up in mismatched fixtures and down in the tight final-round group games, where a low-scoring draw suits both teams.

Asian handicap

Levels out one-sided matches by giving one team a goals start. It is the natural market for a debutant nation against a seeded side, when the straight win price is too short to be worth backing. Our odds explained guide covers how the quarter-goal lines settle.

Accumulators

Several group matches kick off on the same day, which makes World Cup accumulators unusually easy to build – and unusually easy to lose. Our accumulator guide covers staking and acca insurance.

💡World Cup acca tip

Keep group stage accumulators to three or four selections. Group games are volatile, and a treble returning 5/1 to 8/1 pays meaningfully without needing everything to land. Larger accumulators make more sense in the knockout rounds, when form and team news are clearer.

Player markets

Anytime goalscorer, first goalscorer, assists and cards. The Golden Boot is the headline player market, and it has a strong historical pattern: it almost always goes to a forward whose team reaches at least the semi-finals, simply because they get seven or eight matches to score in. Backing a striker from a side you expect to go out in the quarter-finals rarely works, however good the player.

Bet builder

Combine markets within a single match – result, goals and a player selection on one slip. Every major UK bookmaker supports this on World Cup matches, and it is the most-used product during a tournament.

How hosts and venues affect betting

World Cup venues are not interchangeable, and the host choice has a measurable effect on how matches play out. Three factors are worth checking before an in-play bet.

  • Heat and humidity – midday kick-offs in a hot host country slow the second half noticeably. Late goals are less likely, and cards for time-wasting more so.
  • Altitude – matches played high above sea level tire visiting teams faster and tend to produce more goals after the hour mark.
  • Travel – a tournament spread over several countries, as 2030 is, means some teams cover far more miles between group matches than others. Check the schedule before backing a side in its third group game.

Live betting during a World Cup

Every major UK bookmaker runs full in-play markets on World Cup matches: running match odds, next goalscorer, corners, cards and goals lines, all updated through the game. Cash out is available on most match and outright bets, so a position taken before the tournament can be closed once a team reaches the latter stages.

The practical point is kick-off times. A European or North African host means most matches fall in the late afternoon and evening in the UK, which is convenient. A Middle Eastern host, as in 2034, shifts the schedule earlier in the day. The betting apps handle live tournament markets well, with prices refreshing every few seconds.

The 2026 tournament, and what it showed

Spain won the first 48-team World Cup, beating Argentina 1-0 in the final in New Jersey on 19 July 2026. England beat France 6-4 in the third-place match after losing 2-1 to Argentina in the semi-final. Argentina, the holders going in, reached the final but could not retain the trophy.

Three things from 2026 are worth carrying into the next tournament. The first is that the expanded field did produce the mismatches people expected – Germany beat Curacao 7-1 and Sweden beat Tunisia 5-1 in the group stage – so short goals lines on debutant fixtures were justified rather than a trap. The second is that squad depth told: the sides that reached the final were the ones who could rotate through eight matches in 39 days. The third is that the outright favourites held up better than the extra knockout round suggested they might, which is a useful corrective to the assumption that more rounds automatically means more chaos.

Where to bet on the World Cup

Between tournaments the sensible thing is not to open an account for a competition that is years away, but to use one you already hold for the football that is on now. The comparison below shows the current welcome offers from UK-licensed bookmakers, with the significant terms on each.

Responsible gambling

A tournament with matches every day for six weeks creates far more betting opportunities than a normal football season, and that is exactly why it is worth setting a budget before it starts rather than during it. Deposit limits at your bookmaker are the simplest way to hold yourself to one.

If betting stops being entertainment, free and confidential support is available from GambleAware at gambleaware.org and from GamCare. GAMSTOP lets you self-exclude from every UK-licensed gambling site at once.
